Island of Autumn Hues

For a striking display that celebrates the end of the season, set your garden ablaze with flowers and foliage in fiery autumn hues.

A Bed of Blazing Fall Color

Use the colors of fall flowers to create a garden aglow with the vibrant hues of the season.

Fall's bright and bold color scheme can be used to create a garden with seasonal appeal. All you need to do is select flowers that echo the colors of autumn leaves. This garden features gold and orange Marigolds and Chrysanthemums, copper Heleniums, deep red lilies, and white Culver's Roots.

All of the plants in this design thrive in well-drained, humus-rich soil and prefer a site in full sun.

Planting and Aftercare

  1. Prepare the soil in a 6 ft. x 5 ft. planting bed by adding compost and digging it into the soil to a depth of 12-18 inches.

  2. Plant 6-12 'Scarlet Emperor' and Turk's-Cap Lilies in two "clumps" at the back of the bed. Space bulbs 8 inches apart with the top of the bulb 4-6 inches below the soil surface.

  3. Plant three each of Hardy Chrysanthemum, Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' and Culver's Root in a line in front of the lilies. Space plants 2 ft. apart.

  4. After danger of spring frost is plast, fill in middle of bed with Alstoemeria 'Margaret' and African Marigolds. Line front with French Marigolds.

  5. When Turk's-cap Lilies are about 1 ft. tall, surround the clump with tall, thin stakes. Weave string around them for support.

  6. Pinch back stems of Chrysanthemums twice before early summer to encourage bushy plantsand extra flowers.
